Lukashenko Pardons 32 Prisoners as Sanctions Pressure Mounts

Thirty-two individuals regained their freedom Wednesday under a decree signed by Alexander Lukashenko, including twenty-eight people previously convicted on extremism charges. This move continues a pattern of selective releases from the Belarusian penal system, even as human rights watchdogs report that hundreds of political detainees remain behind bars.

Lukashenko Pardons 32 Prisoners as Sanctions Pressure Mounts

The presidential administration utilized its official Telegram channel to announce the pardons, which function as part of an ongoing diplomatic strategy to secure relief from restrictive U.S. sanctions. By thinning the ranks of those imprisoned for dissent, the government seeks to manage international scrutiny while simultaneously asserting domestic control.

Despite these releases, the scope of the crackdown remains vast. According to the human rights organization Viasna, more than 800 political prisoners are still held in Belarusian facilities. The discrepancy between the number of pardoned inmates and those remaining incarcerated highlights the persistent gap between the government’s stated efforts at normalization and the reality of the country’s internal political landscape.
