Mercosur Launches Formal Trade Negotiations with Japan

South American trade bloc Mercosur has officially opened negotiations for an economic partnership agreement with Japan, signaling a strategic pivot toward deepening commercial ties with Asian markets. The announcement follows a series of preliminary diplomatic meetings held throughout the year to align agricultural and industrial trade priorities between the regions.

The decision was formalized during a leaders summit in Asuncion, where representatives from Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay confirmed the start of the dialogue. The move builds on momentum from earlier discussions in January and March, bolstered by a high-level meeting between Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi during the recent G7 summit.

Negotiators aim to improve market access for both agricultural and non-agricultural goods by integrating value chains between the two economies. Beyond the Japanese initiative, the bloc is actively pursuing a trade agreement with Canada and eyeing future discussions with China as part of a broader strategy to diversify its global economic footprint.
