Kerala Assembly Erupts Over Women’s Safety Scheme Standoff

Opposition Leader Pinarayi Vijayan clashed with the ruling government in the Kerala Assembly today, accusing officials of stalling a vital welfare initiative. The dispute centers on the K-SMART verification process, which currently leaves over five lakh approved applications for the Women’s Safety Scheme in administrative limbo.

Vijayan condemned the government’s approach as an attempt to undermine a program serving 1.6 million women and transgender individuals between the ages of 30 and 60. During the session, the Speaker rejected an adjournment motion on the matter, citing previous responses from the Chief Minister. Vijayan dismissed this refusal as an obstruction, insisting the current verification hurdles are politically motivated.

Chief Minister VD Satheesan rejected these claims, firing back that the LDF administration had previously delayed core welfare measures until the final stages of its tenure. The standoff highlights a deepening rift over the management of the scheme, which was originally established to provide financial security through a digital-first platform. With 500,000 applications pending, the political maneuverings leave thousands of beneficiaries awaiting promised support.
