Assam BJP Marks 51st Anniversary of 1975 Emergency

Fifty-one years after Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma gathered with party leaders at Guwahati’s Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra to mark what the BJP labels a 'Black Day,' framing the historic suspension of civil liberties as a cautionary chapter in Indian democracy.

State BJP President Dilip Saikia characterized the 1975 crackdown as a deliberate constitutional subversion, arguing that the then-Prime Minister dismantled democratic norms specifically to bypass an Allahabad High Court ruling that threatened her political standing. Saikia recounted the era as a period of profound institutional instability that resulted in the detention of over one lakh political figures across the country.

The commemoration served as a platform to honor 41 Loktantra Senanis, individuals who faced imprisonment and state persecution during the suspension of rights. By highlighting the experiences of these democracy warriors, the event shifted from a purely political critique of the Congress party to a memorial for those who resisted the executive overreach. Attendees emphasized that documenting these abuses remains essential to ensuring such centralized authority does not return to the Indian political landscape.
