Partisan Clashes Erupt Over Legacy of India’s Emergency

Delhi minister Saurabh Bhardwaj has ignited a fresh political firestorm, comparing the current state of India’s foundational institutions to an undeclared emergency. His remarks, delivered during 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas,' have drawn sharp rebukes from BJP leadership, who insist the true threat to democracy remains the historical precedent of 1975.

Bhardwaj argued that the Election Commission, the Enforcement Directorate, and the CBI are operating under unprecedented pressure, effectively eroding the nation's democratic framework. He specifically cited the weakening of the Right to Information Act as a critical blow to government accountability, suggesting that the mechanisms designed to ensure transparency are being dismantled from within.

In a coordinated response, BJP figures across the country moved to reclaim the narrative. Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma and his Chhattisgarh counterpart, Vishnu Deo Sai, held events in Jaipur to frame June 25 as a permanent reminder of the 1975 Emergency. They described that era as a dark chapter, urging younger generations to view the current political landscape through the lens of historical constitutional violations rather than contemporary grievances.
