Uttarakhand Honors Democracy Warriors of the 1975 Emergency

Pushkar Singh Dhami marked 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' in Dehradun on Thursday by honoring citizens who resisted the 1975 Emergency. The Uttarakhand Chief Minister recognized these individuals for defending civil liberties during a period he labeled a dark chapter for India’s constitutional integrity and democratic governance.

The event served to underscore the struggle of those who faced detention while opposing the suspension of fundamental rights and press freedom nearly five decades ago. Dhami noted that the resilience displayed by these activists remains a cornerstone for current democratic values, framing their historical sacrifice as the catalyst for the restoration of representative rule.

Beyond historical reflection, the administration announced concrete support for the survivors. The monthly honorarium for recognized Democracy Warriors will rise from ₹16,000 to ₹20,000, accompanied by the issuance of special identity cards for both the warriors and their spouses. Dhami positioned these measures within the broader context of current governance, contrasting the suppression of the 1970s with the focus on welfare and development under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He concluded by reiterating that the Constitution remains the ultimate safeguard for the freedom of expression, urging citizens to remain vigilant in protecting the rights that were once under siege.
