Speaking at a meeting of EU environment ministers in Luxembourg on Thursday, Hoekstra noted that the political landscape surrounding the 2035 climate goals has shifted. While the Commission previously bowed to pressure from the automotive sector to adjust the proposed CO2 reduction path to 90%, the rapid uptake of electric cars in major markets suggests the original target of a 100% reduction may now be within reach.
European Parliament officials and national governments are beginning to view the earlier push for weaker regulations as redundant. Hoekstra remains committed to the revised framework, yet he emphasizes that the market itself is driving the transition faster than expected, effectively neutralizing arguments for prolonged combustion engine viability.
