ADB Targets Northeast India With $42 Million Bamboo Initiative

India holds nearly 40 percent of the world’s bamboo forests, yet the nation remains a net importer of the crop. To bridge this gap, the Asian Development Bank has approved a $42.2 million financing facility aimed at transforming the industry across six northeastern states into a competitive, export-ready economic engine.

ADB Targets Northeast India With $42 Million Bamboo Initiative

The investment targets Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura, funding community-based projects that span the entire production cycle. By shifting the focus from raw cultivation to processing and value-added manufacturing, the program seeks to create robust local supply chains. A central component of this strategy is the mandatory establishment of at least one women-led bamboo manufacturing facility in each participating state, designed to integrate rural women directly into the commercial sector.

ADB Country Director for India Mio Oka noted that the initiative leverages indigenous resources to improve rural infrastructure and economic resilience. Beyond direct production, the funding supports the National Bamboo Mission by providing technical training, digital supply chain solutions, and resource mapping. By fostering stronger links between small-scale producers and private investors, the project aims to reduce reliance on vulnerable traditional crops and secure sustainable income streams for thousands of rural households.
