White House Pushes Billion-Dollar Funding for Delphi Pensions and Transit

More than 20,000 salaried retirees who saw their pensions slashed during the 2009 General Motors bankruptcy may finally see relief, as the White House requested $1 billion from Congress to restore their benefits while simultaneously prioritizing a massive infrastructure overhaul at New York’s Penn Station.

The proposed allocation aims to address a long-standing political grievance for Delphi workers, whose retirement security was gutted over a decade ago. Beyond the pension restoration, the administration is seeking a $1 billion boost for the reconstruction of Penn Station, the nation's busiest transit hub. To facilitate these upgrades, the Department of Transportation has committed an initial $200 million toward an $8 billion renovation project designed to modernize infrastructure and improve passenger capacity.

Simultaneously, the administration is pressuring Congress to grant the Federal Aviation Administration greater flexibility in managing its fiscal resources. The proposal specifically targets the reallocation of funds currently tied to a $12.5 billion air traffic control modernization initiative. By shifting these existing assets, officials hope to stabilize the budget for these high-priority domestic projects without requesting additional tax revenue.
