Binoy George Named India's New Ambassador to Uruguay

The Ministry of External Affairs has tapped career diplomat Binoy George to serve as India’s next ambassador to Uruguay. A 2006-batch Indian Foreign Service officer currently serving as a Joint Secretary in the ministry, George is expected to transition into the Montevideo-based post in the coming weeks.

This diplomatic appointment coincides with a broader strategic push to deepen bilateral engagement between the two nations. Uruguay’s representative in New Delhi, Alberto Antonio Guani Amarilla, recently signaled a warm reception for the upcoming opening of an Indian embassy in Montevideo. Amarilla views the physical presence of the mission as a catalyst for expanded high-level dialogue, openly inviting both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to visit Uruguay to mark the occasion.

Beyond ceremonial milestones, the shift reflects a concerted effort to integrate Latin American markets into India’s economic growth trajectory. Amarilla emphasized that the region remains a vital partner for India, urging a focus on mutual interests to move beyond traditional trade. By facilitating more frequent ministerial exchanges and identifying new sectors for collaboration, both governments aim to move past passive diplomacy toward a more robust economic partnership.
