US Loosens Travel Restrictions for Iran World Cup Squad

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security granted the Iranian soccer team an extra day of travel flexibility ahead of their June 26 match in Seattle. The decision follows weeks of friction over security protocols that previously forced players to commute from their Tijuana base just twenty-four hours before kickoff.

The policy shift provides the squad two days of preparation time in the United States, a minor concession after Iran’s coach publicly labeled his players the most oppressed team in the tournament. Despite the adjustment, the team must still depart immediately following the conclusion of their match. Officials maintained that these security measures remain consistent with broader protocols designed to ensure safety for all tournament participants.

Tensions between Washington and Tehran have dominated the backdrop of the team's participation. President Donald Trump previously suggested that while the team was welcome to compete, their presence in the U.S. between matches was not appropriate for their own safety. Before the DHS announcement, Iranian officials signaled their intent to file a formal complaint with FIFA regarding the logistical strain of commuting from their Mexican base. Neither FIFA nor the Iranian delegation provided immediate comment on the updated travel schedule.
