Moscow accuses Washington of reneging on Alaska summit pacts

Three senior Russian officials have publicly accused the United States of failing to uphold commitments made during the Alaska summit between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump last August. The shift signals growing frustration within the Kremlin as Ukrainian drone strikes intensify and diplomatic progress remains stalled.

Moscow accuses Washington of reneging on Alaska summit pacts

Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, and Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov issued a flurry of statements this week claiming the U.S. has abandoned the fundamental understandings reached in Anchorage. Lavrov suggested the summit may have been a tactical ploy by Washington to buy time for rearming Kyiv, while Ryabkov warned that U.S. policy is increasingly aligning with the aggressive stances of the United Kingdom and France. Moscow’s rhetoric highlights a perceived betrayal of the so-called spirit of Alaska, which the Kremlin previously viewed as a path toward freezing the conflict on terms favorable to Russia.

Analysts suggest this public pivot stems from mounting pressure on the Russian military and economy following recent Ukrainian strikes on domestic energy infrastructure. Gerhard Mangott, an expert on Russian politics, noted that Putin is under pressure to provide a visible response to demonstrate continued control. Meanwhile, Oleg Ignatov of the International Crisis Group observed that Russia is dismayed by the total absence of U.S. mediation since Washington shifted its strategic focus toward Iran. With no structured diplomatic process currently in place, Moscow appears to be signaling desperation for a return to direct engagement with the Trump administration to secure an end to the war on its own terms.
