Oman and Iran Initiate Talks on Strait of Hormuz Navigation

Iran and Oman have launched a joint working group to negotiate the administration of the Strait of Hormuz, aiming to resolve disputes over maritime services and operational costs in the vital oil artery. The agreement follows a high-level diplomatic visit to Muscat, signaling a push to reopen the critical shipping lane.

The initiative stems from a memorandum of understanding signed last week, which mandates that Tehran consult with Muscat and other Gulf coastal states regarding the future management of the waterway. During the visit, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi met with Sultan Haitham bin Tariq and Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi to finalize the framework for these discussions.

Since February, the strait has remained largely inaccessible to commercial vessels amid a broader naval blockade enforced by the United States following regional hostilities. Both nations, which share territorial sovereignty over the passage, reaffirmed their commitment to upholding international law and ensuring the route remains secure for global transit. The newly formed working group will now coordinate with other littoral states to address the ongoing closure and restore maritime traffic.
