Trinamool Congress purges eight senior leaders following revolt

The Trinamool Congress hierarchy fractured on Tuesday as leadership expelled eight prominent figures, including Firhad Hakim and Aroop Biswas, following a coordinated mutiny. The purge arrived hours after a rebel faction, led by opposition leader Ritabrata Banerjee, unilaterally declared a new party committee structure and attempted to redefine Mamata Banerjee’s role.

The internal power struggle escalated Monday when the dissident group announced the formation of a 30-member National Working Committee. By positioning Arup Roy as chairperson and naming Hakim and Biswas as vice-chairpersons, the rebels effectively challenged the existing party command. The group claims their objective is to transition Mamata Banerjee into a purely mentorship role, though the central leadership rejected this move as illegitimate.

Beyond the headline names, the expulsion list includes Javed Ahmed Khan, Rathin Ghosh, Biplab Mitra, Sabina Yasmin, and Snehasis Chakraborty. These officials had been issued show-cause notices earlier in the day for alleged anti-party activities. Ritabrata Banerjee remains defiant, asserting that further district-level committees will be established despite the central party’s attempt to excise the rebellion.
