European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen led the praise on Monday, crediting Starmer with strengthening regional security during his two-year tenure. While the prime minister faced a domestic crisis fueled by economic stagnation and a restless electorate, his efforts to repair post-Brexit ties earned him significant goodwill in Brussels. Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin specifically highlighted Starmer’s work in resetting the fractured relationship between London and Dublin.
Starmer’s commitment to Ukraine remained a cornerstone of his foreign policy, earning him a personal thank you from President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who described their dialogue as deeply substantive. This alignment with the so-called "E3"—France, Germany, and the UK—ensured continuity in Western support for Kyiv. Yet, the warmth of the continent was not universal. In Washington, President Donald Trump offered a blunt assessment, labeling Starmer’s leadership a failure on immigration and energy. Meanwhile, in Moscow, Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev attempted to claim credit for the resignation, alleging his online criticism contributed to the prime minister's downfall—a claim later walked back as personal commentary.
