Tiruvallur Gas Leak Sparks Allegations of Child Labour

The death toll from the ammonia gas leak at a Tiruvallur seafood plant has climbed to five, igniting a sharp political confrontation. CPI(M) leader P Shanmugam has accused the facility of systemic negligence, asserting that minors were among the workforce exposed during the June 21 incident.

Shanmugam claims the majority of those affected fall between the ages of 16 and 25, pointing to a failure by Tamil Nadu government inspectors who allegedly neglected site oversight for six months. He contends this lack of regulatory enforcement directly contributed to the industrial disaster. Beyond safety lapses, the CPI(M) leader has criticized the state’s response, labeling the Chief Minister’s Rs 2 lakh compensation package as insufficient for the victims' families.

Currently, 67 people remain under medical observation, while two individuals have been discharged. Health officials confirm that the leak occurred during routine operations at the private export facility. Shanmugam is now demanding that the factory owners provide increased financial restitution to the families of the deceased and that authorities ensure the highest standard of care for those still hospitalized.
