Bangladesh Seeks Labor Market Reopening in Malaysia Talks

During his first overseas trip since taking office, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tarique Rahman urged his Malaysian counterpart, Anwar Ibrahim, to reopen the labor market to migrant workers. The request arrives as both nations attempt to address systemic exploitation that led Kuala Lumpur to freeze hiring from Bangladesh in 2024.

The suspension of recruitment followed widespread reports of debt bondage and fraudulent hiring practices. Thousands of Bangladeshi workers previously arrived in Malaysia only to discover non-existent jobs, forcing many into illegal employment and leaving them vulnerable to arrest or deportation. Rahman confirmed he specifically requested the regularization of these undocumented individuals and the repatriation of those currently in detention during his discussions with Anwar.

Anwar condemned the exploitation of migrant labor for corporate profit, pledging to implement stricter transparency measures to ensure worker welfare. Beyond migration, the two leaders formalized agreements covering investment promotion, cultural exchange, and counterterrorism. They also committed to advancing negotiations for a free trade agreement, signaling a broader effort by Dhaka to bolster its economy through strengthened regional partnerships. Rahman is scheduled to depart for Beijing next, where he will meet with Chinese Premier Li Qiang.
