Israel maintains security zone in Lebanon despite ceasefire tensions

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz declared on Sunday that troops remain free to neutralize threats within a 10-kilometer security zone in southern Lebanon. This assertion follows a fragile ceasefire that took effect Friday, yet faced immediate strain after Israeli strikes killed at least 20 people in Lebanon over the weekend.

Katz emphasized that the Israel Defense Forces will hold their current positions to safeguard northern Israeli communities, claiming all campaign objectives remain intact. These deployments persist despite a conflicting interpretation from Hezbollah, which maintains that Israeli forces lack the right to unrestricted movement within Lebanese territory.

Hezbollah officials have signaled commitment to the ceasefire provided Israel reciprocates, noting that their own fire ceased as of 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Security sources indicated a subsequent pause in major Israeli strikes, marking the longest period of relative quiet since the conflict intensified in March. While both sides navigate the implementation of the truce, the regional situation remains volatile, with diplomatic efforts shifting toward broader discussions involving Iranian and U.S. officials in Switzerland.
