Vance Meets Iranian Officials Amid Strait of Hormuz Standoff

U.S. Vice President JD Vance arrived at a Swiss resort on Sunday for high-stakes talks with Iran, yet the diplomatic effort was immediately darkened by Tehran’s insistence that it has shuttered the Strait of Hormuz and would refuse nuclear negotiations until the fighting in Lebanon reaches a definitive conclusion.

The meeting at the Buergenstock resort follows a memorandum of understanding signed one week ago, which had initially promised the reopening of the vital maritime artery and a cessation of hostilities. However, the optimism surrounding that agreement has evaporated. Iran claims the strait remains closed, citing Washington's failure to secure a lasting ceasefire in Lebanon as the primary reason for stalling broader discussions on its nuclear program.

While U.S. officials maintain that merchant vessels continue to traverse the strait, commercial tracking data suggests a significant decline in traffic, with few ships reporting positions near the Iranian coast. The diplomatic friction is compounded by Israel’s refusal to participate in the talks. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government remains committed to its occupation of southern Lebanon, complicating the U.S.-led effort to dismantle Iran's regional influence. Despite the deadlock, some residents in southern Lebanon have begun returning to their homes, and officials report a temporary lull in major combat operations, even as recovery teams continue to defuse massive unexploded ordnance left by the ongoing conflict.
