TMC internal feud escalates over election fund allegations

Accusing rebel legislators of biting the hand that fed them, Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh has demanded that dissenters return 25 lakh rupees allegedly siphoned from party campaign accounts. The demand follows a deepening rift that has seen 58 of the party’s 80 MLAs break away from the established leadership.

Ghosh specifically targeted expelled Entally MLA Sandipan Saha, claiming he spent over 27 lakh rupees during his campaign, with the vast majority drawn directly from the party election account. He argued that these legislators secured their seats using the TMC symbol and financial backing, rendering their current calls for an investigation into those same funds hypocritical. Ghosh labeled the rebels as backstabbers, suggesting their actions are part of a coordinated effort by political opponents to destabilize the party.

Opposition leader Ritabrata Banerjee, who has emerged as a key figure among the dissidents, countered these claims by questioning the broader integrity of the party’s financial operations. Banerjee alleged that the TMC's resources may be linked to siphoned government funds or illicit proceeds, justifying the FIR filed by the rebel faction. He further challenged the party's spending habits, highlighting that while funds for common workers remain scarce, millions are reportedly spent on chartered flights for leadership travel. Amid this deadlock, former treasurer Aroop Biswas has formally requested that HDFC Bank freeze all TMC accounts, citing a total breakdown in the authority and control of the party’s financial mandates.
