The Ministry of National Defence described the "Immediate Combat Readiness Exercise" as a critical evolution in its modernization strategy. Rather than relying on static, set-piece events, the armed forces will utilize actual troops, real-time terrain, and live equipment to simulate the transition from a peacetime posture to active defense. The objective centers on refining joint command mechanisms, logistical sustainment, and battlefield preparation to ensure units can pivot instantly if a regional training maneuver turns into an actual kinetic attack.
This training cycle coincides with heightened activity from China’s People's Liberation Army. On the same day the drills were announced, Taiwan tracked 21 Chinese aircraft, including J-16 fighters and Y-20 refuelling tankers, operating in the island's southwest airspace and the Western Pacific. While Beijing did not immediately respond to requests for comment, Taipei continues to integrate advanced hardware into its defense network, including the U.S.-made HIMARS rocket systems recently tested in the Taiwan Strait. These exercises serve as a precursor to the larger Han Kuang war games scheduled for August, as the government in Taipei seeks to bolster deterrence against Beijing's territorial claims.
