Yoga as a Global Bridge: Leaders Mark International Day

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan joined citizens in Bhopal to mark the 12th International Day of Yoga, framing the ancient practice as the physical manifestation of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam'—the belief that the world functions as a single, interconnected family.

While Chouhan led the local observance in Madhya Pradesh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a major ceremony on Kolkata’s Red Road. The Prime Minister challenged the perception that this year’s theme, 'Yoga for Healthy Ageing,' is reserved for the elderly. Instead, he argued that yoga should serve as a lifelong discipline to preserve human potential, urging participants to aim for greater physical resilience at 50 than they possessed in their youth.

Across the country, officials including Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha participated in mass demonstrations, reflecting a broader push to integrate wellness into daily life. With 177 countries participating this year, the event underscored the shift of yoga from a traditional discipline to a global health phenomenon. The sessions, held annually on June 21, now emphasize mitigating lifestyle diseases and maintaining flexibility as core components of long-term vitality.
