US and Iranian Negotiators Meet in Switzerland Amid Strait Tensions

Iranian officials declared the Strait of Hormuz closed on Saturday, challenging a fragile 60-day ceasefire just as delegations arrived in Switzerland for high-stakes peace talks. While Tehran cites ongoing Israeli strikes in Lebanon as a breach of terms, U.S. military data confirms commercial shipping remains active in the waterway.

US and Iranian Negotiators Meet in Switzerland Amid Strait Tensions

U.S. Vice President JD Vance departed for Switzerland alongside envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to lead negotiations aimed at cementing the interim deal signed by Donald Trump and Masoud Pezeshkian. Despite the diplomatic push, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps issued warnings to merchant vessels, claiming the strait was shut. U.S. Central Command countered this, reporting that 55 ships carrying over 17 million barrels of oil transited the passage on Saturday, vowing to maintain the route as a secure global artery.

Mohammad Mokhber, an adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, accused Washington of failing to uphold the ceasefire on all fronts, specifically pointing to continued Israeli military operations in Lebanon. While the Israeli government maintains it will not withdraw from captured Lebanese territories, reports indicate local forces continue to trade fire with Hezbollah. As the Iranian delegation, led by Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, prepares to press for strict adherence to the 14-point agreement, the viability of these talks remains tethered to the volatile security situation on the ground.
