Vance heads to Swiss talks as Iran claims Hormuz blockade

The Strait of Hormuz appears on the brink of closure after Iran’s Revolutionary Guard declared the waterway restricted, citing alleged truce violations. Despite the escalation, U.S. Vice President JD Vance confirmed he is preparing to travel to Switzerland to advance the fragile interim ceasefire deal between Washington and Tehran.

Vance remains optimistic about the diplomatic progress, noting that negotiators Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff are already on the ground in Buergenstock to iron out technical details. While the IRGC warned ships to stay away from the vital energy conduit, the Vice President reported no direct evidence of a total closure, calling the current friction a delicate dance of protocols.

Simultaneously, the situation on the ground in Lebanon remains volatile, threatening the broader cessation of hostilities. Although a truce was intended to stabilize the region, Lebanese Civil Defence reported 16 deaths from Israeli strikes on Saturday. Israel maintains it is responding to Hezbollah projectiles, while the group insists it will resist any Israeli freedom of movement within its territory. As the death toll from the regional war climbs past 8,000, the stakes for the upcoming Swiss summit are immense; the interim agreement hinges on a successful halt to fighting in exchange for significant sanctions relief and access to frozen assets.
