Tharoor and Vijayan Clash Over Kerala’s Fiscal Future

A sharp political confrontation has emerged in Kerala as Congress MP Shashi Tharoor challenged former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan over the state’s financial stability. Tharoor dismissed the LDF’s criticism of the recent state Budget, labeling their economic record a decade-long accumulation of debt and systemic mismanagement rather than a model of growth.

The dispute centers on the LDF’s tenure, which Vijayan defended as a successful integration of social welfare and infrastructure development. Vijayan argued that the UDF government’s new Budget marks a departure from Kerala’s traditional people-centered model, accusing the current administration of prioritizing corporate interests and privatizing public assets. He claimed the policy shift mirrors the neoliberal agenda promoted by the BJP, effectively surrendering the state’s resources to private profiteering.

Tharoor countered these assertions by pointing to a staggering ₹5.07 lakh crore debt burden left behind by the Left Democratic Front. He mocked the claim that the LDF successfully balanced welfare with development, highlighting that the state had resorted to borrowing specifically to cover basic expenditures like salaries and holiday bonuses. The Congress leader further alleged that the LDF’s fiscal history is marred by accounting manipulation and corruption, rendering their critique of the current budget hypocritical. As the war of words escalates on social media, the Left has pledged to organize formal opposition to the Budget, framing their resistance as a defense of the long-standing Kerala model.
