Democratic senators have raised alarms over potential security vulnerabilities and the substantial costs associated with retrofitting the jet for presidential use, which some estimates place above $1 billion. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink defended the project, emphasizing that the expedited delivery process adhered to rigorous security standards. The jet serves as an interim solution while Boeing struggles with a four-year delay on its own $3.9 billion contract for two custom 747-8 aircraft, which are now not expected until 2028. The new color scheme will eventually extend to the wider presidential transport fleet, including the VC-25B and several Boeing 757-200s.
