The Prime Minister’s intervention follows rising anxieties over the security of Indian crews operating within the Gulf region and the Strait of Hormuz. According to Tharoor, Modi emphasized that commercial sailors are not combatants, arguing that even if vessels are accused of violating blockades, lethal force remains an unacceptable response. The meeting, which took place in Evian, France, marked the first direct dialogue between the two leaders in 16 months.
Beyond immediate maritime safety, the two sides discussed the 14-point memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran aimed at ending hostilities. While Tharoor welcomed the framework, he cautioned that its success rests entirely on the 60-day window for formalizing a comprehensive peace deal. He also addressed regional friction, noting that while Israel’s security concerns are valid, they cannot be permitted to dictate the stability of the global maritime economy. Tharoor stressed that a balanced approach is required to ensure that the wider international community is no longer forced to bear the costs of the ongoing conflict.
