The deal materialized under intense pressure after overnight Israeli airstrikes claimed the lives of at least 18 people in Lebanon. Simultaneously, Hezbollah forces dealt a heavy blow to the Israeli military, killing four soldiers in southern Lebanon in one of the group's most significant attacks of the current conflict. These clashes endangered the interim agreement signed Wednesday between the U.S. and Iran, which mandates a permanent cessation of hostilities across all regional fronts.
Hezbollah lawmakers had previously signaled to Tehran that negotiations with Washington remained contingent on a comprehensive halt to the fighting. Despite a brief lull earlier in the week, the rapid intensification of violence forced a return to the negotiating table. The success of this latest truce now rests on the ability of the signatories to maintain the terms of the broader U.S.-Iranian pact, which requires an immediate and total termination of military operations.
