Netherlands shifts frigate toward Strait of Hormuz

The Dutch government has diverted an air defense frigate currently patrolling the Indo-Pacific toward the Strait of Hormuz to potentially join an international maritime coalition. Defense Minister Dilan Yesilgoz confirmed the vessel’s transit in a letter to parliament, noting the ship remains weeks away from the volatile waterway.

The deployment follows a recent U.S.-Iran ceasefire agreement, though the shipping industry remains wary. Despite a slight uptick in oil shipments, insurance officials continue to demand urgent mine-clearing operations to secure the transit corridor. Diplomatic efforts led by France and Britain to establish a multinational naval presence face stiff resistance from Tehran, which has explicitly signaled its opposition to foreign military assets in the region.

Germany is pursuing a similar strategy, announcing on Thursday the deployment of two ships to the Red Sea as a preparatory measure. While the Dutch frigate navigates the long journey from the Indo-Pacific, the move underscores a broader European push to bolster security presence in the Middle East despite ongoing geopolitical friction.
