BJP leadership summons Karnataka brass over Legislative Council cross-voting

The Bharatiya Janata Party central leadership has summoned its top Karnataka officials to Delhi on June 23 following reports of widespread cross-voting during the June 18 Legislative Council elections. At least 11 NDA lawmakers are under scrutiny after official candidates failed to secure expected support despite the party's strength in the assembly.

State president BY Vijayendra, Leader of Opposition R Ashoka, and state in-charge Radhamohan Das Agarwal must account for a significant shortfall that saw the Congress party secure five of the seven contested seats. While the BJP holds 64 assembly seats, its candidates managed only 56 votes, while the JD(S) candidate, bolstered by an NDA pact, fell seven votes short of the anticipated tally.

To address the internal fallout, the party has formed a three-member probe committee consisting of CT Ravi, N Mahesh, and Mahesh Tenginakayi. The panel is tasked with identifying the defectors and submitting a comprehensive report by June 25, 2026. Vijayendra confirmed that disciplinary action against the responsible MLAs is inevitable, dismissing any possibility of amnesty for those who undermined the party's electoral strategy.

Former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy echoed the frustration, noting that the JD(S) also suffered from internal dissent. Despite the setback, he characterized the election as a test of loyalty rather than a lost cause, signaling that the coalition’s focus has already shifted toward the 2028 assembly polls. The investigation will now determine the extent of the damage caused by the internal breakdown within the NDA ranks.
