Police raid home of Lula’s Senate leader in Banco Master graft probe

Federal police executed search warrants against Senator Jaques Wagner on Thursday, bringing a widening financial scandal into the inner circle of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. The operation, authorized by the Supreme Court, investigates alleged illicit ties between the governing coalition leader and the defunct lender Banco Master.

The investigation centers on claims that bank executives, including owner Daniel Vorcaro, funneled bribes—allegedly including an apartment and millions of reais—to Wagner in exchange for political influence. While the senator denied receiving any undue advantages during an interview with BandNews, police seized cash from his residence, which Wagner claimed were official travel allowances. The warrants, part of 18 simultaneous actions across Bahia, Sao Paulo, and the Federal District, follow the central bank’s liquidation of Banco Master last November.

Supreme Court Justice Andre Mendonca authorized the searches after finding sufficient evidence of a potential illicit relationship. Although this does not constitute a formal indictment, the probe is increasingly impacting the political landscape ahead of the upcoming election. The scandal has already touched key opposition figures, including Senator Ciro Nogueira and Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, both of whom have faced their own scrutiny regarding links to Vorcaro. For now, the Workers Party leadership and Finance Minister Dario Durigan have publicly signaled their trust in Wagner, though the proximity of the raid to the president’s core team marks a significant escalation in the ongoing graft inquiry.
