Zoram People's Movement Secures First Rajya Sabha Seat

With 26 votes cast in his favor, K Laltluangkima has become the first Zoram People's Movement representative to enter the Rajya Sabha. The victory solidifies the ruling party's dominance in Mizoram, as Laltluangkima comfortably outpaced Mizo National Front candidate Zothansangi Hmar, who managed to secure only 10 votes during Thursday's election.

The election process saw a total of 36 ballots cast, with three legislators—BJP members K. Beichhua and K Hrahmo, alongside Congress representative C Ngunlianchunga—choosing to abstain. Assembly Secretary and Returning Officer Zothansanga Ralte confirmed that ZPM legislator W Chhuanawma was absent from the proceedings due to health concerns.

This result reinforces the current legislative landscape in the 40-member Mizoram Assembly, where the ZPM controls 27 seats. The Mizo National Front remains the primary opposition with 10 seats, while the BJP and Congress hold two and one seats respectively. For the ZPM, this win represents a strategic expansion of its political influence from the state assembly to the national stage in New Delhi.
