Gunfire and Explosions Rock Capital Airport in Niger

Assailants in two white vehicles launched a pre-dawn assault on the Niamey airport and military airbase complex Thursday, triggering a fierce firefight that left at least four security officers dead and forced a massive military sweep of the capital’s perimeter as the nation reels from a wave of coordinated attacks.

The violence erupted at 6 a.m. local time, with gunmen reportedly embedding themselves within a customs building near the facility. By noon, the immediate area had fallen under a strict security cordon, though sporadic gunfire persisted as soldiers conducted clearance operations. The attack follows a brutal 24-hour period for Niger’s armed forces, which faced coordinated strikes on military bases in the western Tillaberi region on Wednesday. Reports from security sources indicate that the military abandoned its position in Inates, while the assault on Banibangou resulted in at least 10 fatalities and over 40 injuries.

While no group has claimed responsibility for the Niamey incursion, the tactical profile mirrors previous operations by Islamic State affiliates in the Sahel. In January, militants targeted the same airport complex, specifically aiming to cripple air command and drone capabilities essential to the country’s counterinsurgency efforts. Niger, alongside neighbors Mali and Burkina Faso, remains trapped in a long-standing conflict with jihadist factions linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, a struggle that has displaced millions across the region and repeatedly challenged the stability of the central government.
