Ivan Cepeda’s Long Road to the Colombian Presidency

The son of an assassinated communist leader and a former exile, Ivan Cepeda now stands on the precipice of Colombia’s highest office. Carrying the legacy of his father’s murder and a career defined by peace negotiations, the 63-year-old philosopher faces a stiff challenge from right-wing contender Abelardo De La Espriella.

Ivan Cepeda’s Long Road to the Colombian Presidency

Cepeda, a leftist senator and activist, advocates for an agenda he terms "social capitalism," aiming to consolidate and radicalize the reforms initiated by President Gustavo Petro. His platform centers on taxing the wealthy, redistributing a million hectares of land to conflict victims, and expanding state support for the impoverished. While he holds strong support in Bogota and the Amazonian regions, he faces significant opposition from the business community and conservatives who fear his potential influence on the economy.

His path to this election has been shaped by deep personal tragedy. In 1994, he witnessed the aftermath of his father Manuel Cepeda’s assassination, a crime later linked by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights to state military forces. Despite accusations from political rivals regarding alleged ties to former FARC leaders—claims he consistently denies—Cepeda emphasizes his commitment to democratic institutions. As Sunday’s vote approaches, recent polling places him at 44.8%, trailing Abelardo De La Espriella’s 52.6% in a race that presents two starkly different visions for the nation’s future.
