US trims NATO crisis force contributions amid alliance transition

The United States has moved to reduce its immediate contributions to NATO’s crisis response forces, a shift confirmed by Secretary-General Mark Rutte on Thursday. While the cut is effective now, the alliance is currently coordinating efforts to redistribute responsibilities and ensure that existing security gaps are filled by other member states.

Speaking to reporters in Brussels ahead of a defense ministers' summit, Rutte clarified the timeline of the withdrawal, dismissing ambiguity regarding when the changes would take hold. He emphasized that the adjustment is primarily a planning mechanism rather than a total retreat from the alliance's defensive posture.

Rutte underscored that the classification of these forces as a planning tool provides a buffer, noting that in the event of an active conflict, all members are expected to mobilize their full capacity. The U.S. commitment to collective defense remains theoretically intact, with the Secretary-General asserting that Washington would still max out its efforts should a war break out, despite the current reduction in peacetime force readiness.
