US and Iran Move to Normalize Gulf Maritime Traffic Under New Accord

The United States and Iran are set to formalize a sweeping memorandum of understanding this Friday, effectively ending naval blockades and hostilities across the Persian Gulf. According to reports from the IRNA news agency, the agreement marks a significant shift, requiring both nations to restore regional maritime commerce to prewar levels.

Under the terms of the deal, Washington has committed to unfreezing Iranian assets and lifting long-standing restrictions on the country's ports and shipping lanes. In exchange, Tehran has pledged to ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels through the Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, while reaffirming a commitment to forgo the development or acquisition of nuclear weapons.

The document, which surfaced via a U.S.-provided text and subsequent IRNA publication, aims to dismantle the current state of military friction. By facilitating the return of marine traffic to previous volumes, the agreement attempts to stabilize a region long defined by proxy conflicts and economic isolation. Both sides are expected to finalize the signatures at the end of the week, formally closing a period of intense maritime confrontation.
