European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen championed the "Return Regulation," arguing that member states require more efficient tools to manage visa overstays and rejected asylum claims. The policy, which now awaits final endorsement from the 27 EU member governments, addresses the political fallout from the 2015-16 refugee crisis that reshaped the continent's electoral landscape.
International observers warn that the new framework compromises fundamental protections. United Nations human rights chief Volker Turk condemned the move, suggesting that the expansion of offshore hubs risks violating non-refoulement principles. Tension is further fueled by the Commission’s recent decision to invite Taliban officials to Brussels for technical talks on repatriating Afghan nationals. While the Commission maintains these discussions are purely procedural, the move has drawn sharp rebuke from national leaders like Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot, who labeled the engagement inappropriate given the Taliban's human rights record.
