EU Parliament Approves Hardline Migration Overhaul

The European Parliament voted Wednesday to overhaul migration policy, granting member states the authority to establish offshore detention centres and accelerate deportations. This legislative shift reflects a decade of intensifying anti-immigration sentiment across the bloc, signaling a departure from previous humanitarian standards toward a focus on border deterrence.

The new framework, which awaits final ratification from the 27 EU member governments, aims to streamline the removal of individuals who have overstayed visas or had asylum claims rejected. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen championed the measures, arguing that current procedures lack the efficiency required to manage returns effectively.

Human rights advocates and the United Nations have voiced sharp opposition, warning that the policy risks systemic dehumanization and the erosion of protections against refoulement. UN human rights chief Volker Turk cautioned that the focus on deterrence ignores the fundamental drivers of migration, such as poverty and political instability. Tensions have further escalated following reports that the Commission invited Taliban officials to Brussels to negotiate the return of Afghan nationals. While officials insist the talks are strictly technical and do not equate to diplomatic recognition of the Taliban regime, the engagement highlights the extreme measures the bloc is willing to pursue to reduce migrant numbers.
