BBC to slash 550 jobs in major restructuring drive

Facing a sharp decline in younger audiences and the rise of digital streaming competitors, the BBC announced 550 job cuts on Wednesday. The move serves as the opening phase of a broader strategy spearheaded by new director-general Matt Brittin to secure £500 million in savings over the next three years.

The restructuring targets the heart of the broadcaster’s news and content divisions, involving the closure of long-running programs and the consolidation of production teams. Beyond the immediate layoffs, the corporation expects to cut between 1,800 and 2,000 positions total by 2027. Further reductions, including 700 corporate roles, are slated for announcement in the coming months.

Brittin, a former Google executive appointed in March, faces the daunting task of stabilizing the organization ahead of its Royal Charter expiration in 2027. With the current funding model under scrutiny, leadership is weighing the future of the household licence fee against potential shifts toward subscription-based models or advertising revenue. Chair Samir Shah has characterized the overhaul as a necessary response to a period of genuine risk for the publicly funded institution.
