South African Unions Warn Against Anti-Migrant Protests

South Africa’s largest labour unions have issued a stern warning to workers ahead of a June 30 deadline set by anti-immigrant groups, threatening disciplinary consequences for those who skip their shifts to join protests. The move follows weeks of escalating xenophobic violence and tensions across the country.

South African Unions Warn Against Anti-Migrant Protests

The coalition, representing millions of workers through the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), FEDUSA, SAFTU, and NACTU, urged employees to prioritize their livelihoods over political agitation. The unions explicitly stated that workers would lose their protection if they chose to participate in demonstrations, emphasizing that scapegoating foreign nationals will not resolve the nation's deep-seated structural issues or unemployment. This stance aligns with President Cyril Ramaphosa’s recent appeal for social cohesion, as the government struggles to manage the economic fallout of its high-migration landscape.

The volatility on the ground remains high. In Durban, police deployed stun grenades and teargas to disperse a crowd of thousands of Malawian nationals awaiting repatriation. Malawi has reported that 10,000 of its citizens are currently in distress, prompting an urgent, resource-heavy effort to organize transport back home. As safety concerns mount, other nations, including Ghana, Nigeria, and Mozambique, have also begun repatriating their citizens, signaling a significant shift in the regional migrant labor dynamic.
