A Decade of Friction: UK Exporters Pivot Away from Europe

For Michael Harte, the promise of a frictionless Brexit vanished the moment mandatory veterinary checks and customs paperwork made his British cheese uncompetitive in France. Four years after abandoning his European ambitions, the Telford-based entrepreneur has successfully shifted his focus to the Asian market, leaving the EU trade vacuum behind.

A Decade of Friction: UK Exporters Pivot Away from Europe

Bridge Cheese, a company with an annual turnover of £35 million, serves as a microcosm for the thousands of British firms forced to recalibrate since the 2016 referendum. While the EU remains the UK's largest trading partner, food producers have faced a disproportionate burden. Veterinary certification costs for a 40-foot container bound for Asia now mirror the price of shipping just two pallets to the continent, highlighting the efficiency gap created by the post-Brexit regulatory divide. Between 2021 and 2025, UK food exports to the bloc plummeted by more than 23% compared to pre-Brexit levels.

Economic projections remain grim. The government estimates the UK economy will be 4% smaller 15 years post-Brexit than it would have been within the EU, with roughly half that impact already realized. In contrast, Northern Ireland has emerged as a statistical outlier. By maintaining free access to the EU single market through specific post-conflict arrangements, the region saw its economy grow 16.5% between 2015 and 2023, outpacing England’s 11.6% expansion. Despite Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s upcoming efforts to negotiate a reduction in veterinary checks, deep-seated uncertainty persists. For many business owners, the political volatility of six prime ministers in eight years has rendered long-term investment a secondary priority to basic survival, turning Brexit from a singular event into a lingering, unresolved economic condition.
