The pressure on Starmer intensified following the resignation of Defence Minister John Healey, who criticized the Prime Minister’s fiscal priorities regarding military spending. Streeting, who exited the cabinet last month, publicly urged Starmer to reflect on his position over the weekend to avoid a formal contest. He indicated that he is prepared to trigger the necessary party mechanisms if Starmer refuses to vacate the office voluntarily.
Attention now shifts to the Makerfield by-election this Thursday. If Andy Burnham, the Greater Manchester mayor, secures a seat in Parliament, he is widely viewed as the primary rival to challenge Starmer for the Labour leadership. While Starmer stated he supports Burnham’s candidacy for the seat, he insisted the party should prioritize stability rather than internal power struggles. Speaking from the G7 summit in Evian, Starmer remained defiant, maintaining that any formal challenge would ultimately be detrimental to the country.
