Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung told the Foreign Correspondents Club in Taipei that while Taiwan stands ready for the dialogue, he cannot speak for Trump’s intentions. The proposed communication, first suggested by Trump following his summit with Xi Jinping in Beijing last month, would mark a significant departure from diplomatic norms established in 1979. Beijing, which claims the democratically governed island as its own territory, continues to object to any official contact between foreign governments and Taipei.
Beyond the potential call, the administration is weighing a new arms package for Taiwan estimated at $14 billion. Lin dismissed concerns that the recent Trump-Xi meeting signaled a shift in military support, characterizing the timing of such sales as a technical matter. The United States remains legally obligated to provide Taiwan with defensive capabilities, a commitment underscored by a record $11 billion aid package announced last December that drew sharp condemnation from the Chinese government.
