G7 Leaders Demand Lebanon Ceasefire Amidst U.S.-Iran De-escalation

Gathered in Evian-les-Bains, G7 leaders pushed for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon on Wednesday, signaling support for a fragile U.S.-brokered interim deal with Tehran. The agreement aims to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, though deep-seated regional tensions and a looming rift with Israel threaten the stability of the fragile peace.

The summit provided President Donald Trump a platform to present the terms of the memorandum of understanding signed with Tehran. While the deal extends an existing ceasefire by 60 days to facilitate permanent negotiations, it leaves core U.S. objectives—such as the dismantling of Iran’s nuclear stockpile and missile capabilities—largely unaddressed. Critics within the Republican party argue that the concessions could prove costly ahead of the November midterm elections, particularly as the theocratic government in Tehran remains firmly in power.

A significant point of contention remains the Israeli occupation of southern Lebanon. Despite the G7 call for the disarmament of Hezbollah and a full cessation of hostilities, Israel maintains its military presence and reserves the right to act independently. This stance has created friction between Washington and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with Trump publicly questioning Israel’s conduct. Meanwhile, the economic component of the deal includes a $300 billion reconstruction fund backed by Gulf states, contingent on Iranian compliance. Global markets have responded to the news, as Brent crude prices dipped below $80 per barrel on expectations that the Strait of Hormuz will soon reopen to international shipping.
