HRCP questions legitimacy of Gilgit-Baltistan election results

A sudden reversal by the Election Commission regarding re-polling in five Gilgit-Baltistan constituencies has triggered sharp criticism from the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan. The rights body warns that the abrupt cancellation of fresh voting, followed by the immediate announcement of final results, threatens the credibility of the entire electoral process.

The commission initially ordered re-polling in multiple areas, a decision that drew immediate scrutiny from opposition parties and independent candidates. These groups have long alleged that administrative procedures and recounting efforts are susceptible to manipulation, potentially skewing the formation of the next regional government. By suspending the re-polls without sufficient justification, election authorities have intensified suspicions of political interference.

Transparency remains the primary point of contention for the HRCP. The organization is demanding a clear, public accounting of the legal grounds used to first order and then abruptly halt the re-voting process. Without such clarity, the commission argues that public confidence in democratic institutions across the region is likely to deteriorate further. The HRCP maintains that all electoral disputes must be resolved through impartial, credible mechanisms to ensure the final outcome accurately reflects the will of the voters.
