South Korea Pushes Trump to Re-engage Kim Jong Un

During a brief exchange at the G7 summit, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung pressed Donald Trump to leverage his personal diplomacy to cool tensions with North Korea. As regional security risks mount, Seoul is betting that a return to direct leader-level dialogue remains the most viable path to prevent further escalation.

The request, which occurred during a photo session, aligns with Trump’s own public signals of interest in renewing contact with the North Korean leader. While the 2019 Hanoi summit ended in a stalemate over sanctions relief and nuclear disarmament, Seoul officials, including Unification Minister Chung Dong-young, view recent social media overtures from the former president as a potential opening for renewed communication.

Beyond the bilateral exchange, the G7 summit underscored the urgency of the situation. Leaders issued a joint statement highlighting the threat posed by North Korea’s advancing nuclear and missile programs, alongside concerns regarding illicit cryptocurrency theft. For South Korea, the primary objective is to restore a diplomatic channel before the deepening military alignment between Pyongyang and Moscow further complicates the regional security architecture. Any potential breakthrough would likely prioritize stability and the reopening of communication lines, rather than attempting an immediate, comprehensive nuclear agreement.
