Ukraine Boosts Military Pay and Foreign Recruitment to Fill Ranks

The government intends to implement these salary increases by June, utilizing a newly approved cabinet mechanism to ensure financial consistency for those serving. By offering higher earnings to combat personnel and introducing fixed-term contracts, officials hope to transform military service into a more sustainable career path rather than an indefinite commitment. These financial adjustments are supported by a 90 billion euro loan from the European Union, which provides the necessary capital to sustain the record-high defense spending.

Beyond domestic recruitment, the strategy seeks to broaden the appeal for foreign fighters. Currently, an estimated 10,000 volunteers from more than 70 nations operate within Ukrainian ranks. By formalizing and streamlining these recruitment avenues, Kyiv hopes to bolster its tactical numbers without relying solely on domestic mobilization efforts that have faced significant strain since the conflict began.
