US Trims NATO Force Posture in Strategic Realignment

The United States is scaling back its commitment of aircraft and warships to NATO operations in Europe, a move that limits the alliance’s capacity for long-range strikes and surveillance. Senior European officials confirmed the shift, which marks a significant tightening of the American military footprint across the continent.

The Pentagon plans to cut its F-16 and F-15E fighter jet presence from 150 to 100 units. Maritime reconnaissance coverage will drop from 26 aircraft to 15, while all eight aerial refueling tankers currently stationed in the region are slated for withdrawal. The realignment also includes the redeployment of an aircraft carrier and a missile-launching submarine, along with their associated strike groups.

European Command officials describe this transition as an effort to 'rightsize' contributions to the alliance. This policy shift aligns with the Trump administration’s long-standing pressure on NATO members to increase their own defense spending to 3.5% of GDP, signaling a departure from previous reliance on American military dominance to secure European borders.
