Greece Commits €1 Billion to Modernize Aerial and Naval Fleet

A parliamentary committee has greenlit a massive defense spending package ranging between €1 billion and €1.2 billion, signaling a shift toward rapid modernization. The procurement plan prioritizes air transport and surveillance capabilities, effectively moving Greece closer to upgrading its military infrastructure after years of fiscal austerity.

Roughly half of the allocated budget is designated for the acquisition and long-term support of Brazilian-made Embraer C-390 military transport aircraft. Beyond fixed-wing assets, the defense ministry is diversifying its unmanned aerial capabilities by securing Israeli Heron systems alongside U.S.-manufactured V-BAT drones. The remaining capital is set aside for the technical overhaul of the Hellenic Navy's German-made MEKO-200 frigates, a move aimed at extending the operational lifespan of existing surface vessels.

While the legislative committee has signaled its support, the final hurdle remains the Council for Foreign Affairs and Defense, known as KYSEA. Approval from this top authority is expected to be a formality, clearing the path for a wider procurement strategy. This initiative fits into a long-term national roadmap that envisions €28 billion in defense investments through 2036, intended to restore military readiness following a decade of economic stagnation.
