Indian Seafarers Killed in Attack Near Strait of Hormuz

Three Indian crew members died when the oil tanker MT Settebello came under fire off the coast of Oman, near the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The incident has triggered urgent demands from maritime labor groups for enhanced protection, as the region becomes an increasingly dangerous corridor for civilian merchant vessels.

The attack on the MT Settebello resulted in the deaths of Deck Cadet Aditya Sharma, Engine Fitter Shivanand Chaurasia, and Chief Engineer Patanala Suresh. While 21 other Indian crew members were rescued, the vessel sustained significant damage to its engine room. The Forward Seamen's Union of India (FSUI) characterized the strike as part of a broader, deteriorating security environment that has turned critical shipping lanes into combat zones. Beyond the loss of life, the union has raised alarms regarding the fate of 20 Indian sailors aboard the MT Jalveer, another vessel recently caught in regional hostilities.

FSUI has rejected the notion that diplomacy alone can safeguard workers in high-risk zones, pointing to a string of recent attacks on commercial ships as evidence of a systemic failure to protect non-combatants. The union is now pushing for a comprehensive crisis-management framework, including mandatory naval escorts for ships carrying Indian personnel and improved insurance standards. Asserting that seafarers are essential workers rather than military assets, the organization is calling for a transparent international investigation to establish accountability for what they describe as the targeting of innocent civilians in geopolitical crossfires.
